In June 2011, 20% of family cases involved at least one litigant-in-person (LiP), but the advent of new laws in April 2013 further reduced the number of people with family matters who were able to afford representation by a lawyer. This forced many to represent themselves and others to ignore the courts altogether; by 2015 the proportion of cases had risen to 76%.

These days for many, representing themselves is the only way to get through the system as hiring a lawyer from the beginning can be very expensive.
